Medical and surgical treatments to improve the appearance and function of scars
MADRID | ZURICH
Scarring can occur as a result of accidents, surgery, burns or certain skin conditions. In some cases they can be very visible, painful or even cause limitations in the mobility of the affected area.
The healing process depends on many factors, such as the anatomical location, the suturing technique used, postoperative care, the treatments applied and the patient's genetic predisposition.
In certain situations, scar correction can be planned at the time of the initial surgery or performed at a later date to improve the appearance and elasticity of the skin.
In our clinics in Madrid and Zurich, each case is assessed individually to determine which technique is most suitable, taking into account both the aesthetic aspect and the functionality of the affected area.

Instructions
What scar correction can improve
Scar treatment can be aimed at improving different aspects of the affected skin, both aesthetically and functionally.
Depending on the case, procedures can help to:
- improve the appearance of visible scars
- reduce irregularities or depressions in the skin
- improve the elasticity of the affected area
- reduce discomfort or functional limitations
- harmonising skin colour and texture
The choice of treatment depends on factors such as the type of scar, its location and the length of time since its formation.
Types of scars
Types of scars that can be treated
A scar can take up to 12 months to complete its formation process, and its final evolution can have aesthetic, functional or even psychological consequences.
The most common types of scars include:
- Hypertrophic scars: appear as reddish, thickened reliefs that remain within the boundaries of the original wound.
- Keloid scars: are bulging scars that may extend beyond the boundaries of the initial injury. In some cases they can be painful and require more specific treatments.
- Scar contractures: often occur after burns and can cause skin retraction, which can limit the mobility of the affected area.
- Acne scars: are usually smaller scars and may appear as depressions or irregularities on the surface of the skin.
Types of treatment
Treatments available for scar correction
There are currently a number of different procedures available to improve the appearance and quality of scars, which can be surgical or minimally invasive.
Among the most commonly used treatments are:
- Steroid injections. They are used especially in the treatment of hypertrophic or keloid scars. The therapeutic cycles are carried out according to an established schedule.
- Surgical correction of scars. It includes different techniques such as scar excision, local or regional flaps, tissue expanders or skin grafts, depending on the characteristics of the case.
- Fat grafting (lipofilling). Fat can be grafted under depressed or adherent scars with the aim of restoring volume and improving skin quality.
- Dermatological products and silicone patches. Certain dermatological products and silicone patches can be used to improve the development of scars.
- Girdles or compression garments. Especially indicated for burn scars, as they can help prevent hypertrophic or keloid scars.
- Minimally invasive dermatological procedures. These include lasers, medical peels, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or microneedling techniques, which stimulate collagen production and promote skin regeneration.
