Abdominoplasty
Abdominal surgery to correct excess skin, flaccidity and abdominal diastasis.
MADRID | ZURICH
The abdomen is one of the areas of the body that changes the most over time. Pregnancy, significant weight changes, hormonal changes or simply natural ageing can alter the structure of the abdominal wall. The skin loses elasticity, excess skin may appear and, in some cases, the abdominal muscles separate (diastasis), changing the shape and firmness of the abdomen.
Abdominoplasty is a surgery that is performed to allows these changes to be corrected when exercise and healthy habits are no longer sufficient to restore abdominal contours.. It is not simply a matter of removing skin or fat, but of restoring the structure of the abdomen in a balanced way, respecting the anatomy of each patient.
Each case requires an individual assessment. The quality of the skin, the distribution of fatty tissue, the condition of the abdominal musculature and the patient's expectations determine which type of intervention may be most appropriate.

Benefits
What are the benefits of abdominoplasty?
Abdominoplasty is indicated when there are structural alterations of the abdomen that cannot be corrected by exercise or non-surgical treatments alone.
Among the most frequent situations are:
- Excess abdominal skin after pregnancy or significant weight loss
- Marked abdominal flaccidity
- Separation of the rectus abdominis muscles (diastasis)
- Localised fat accumulation associated with skin flaccidity
- Loss of abdominal contour definition
- Alteration of the umbilicus or abdominal wall after previous surgeries
The aim is not to create an artificially flat abdomen, but to restore natural proportions and improve the firmness of the abdominal wall.
Types of abdominoplasty and surgical techniques
The technique used depends on the patient's anatomy and the degree of correction required. There is no one-size-fits-all abdominoplasty.
Mini-abdominoplasty
Indicated when excess skin and flaccidity is concentrated in the lower abdomen, below the navel. Allows the removal of localised skin and fat through a smaller incision, without the need to reposition the umbilicus.
Full abdominoplasty
It is the most common technique when there is significant excess skin or abdominal diastasis.
It includes:
- Removal of excess skin
- Repair of the abdominal musculature
- Navel repositioning
- Possible combination with liposuction to improve definition
Abdominoplasty with liposuction
In many patients, correction of the abdomen benefits from the combination with liposuction to improve the contour of the flanks and waist.
360° Abdominoplasty
Indicated when the excess skin and tissue affects the entire abdominal contour and lumbar region, This can occur after significant weight loss. It allows the abdominal and posterior region to be treated in a more comprehensive way.
The choice of technique is always made after a detailed clinical assessment.
Planning
How a customised abdominoplasty is planned
Surgical planning is one of the most important aspects of the procedure.
Various factors are analysed during the consultation:
- Skin quality and elasticity
- Presence of abdominal diastasis
- Distribution of fat tissue
- Position of the navel
- Previous scars
- Realistic patient expectations
The position of the scar is carefully designed to be as inconspicuous as possible, usually located on the lower abdomen, where it is usually covered by underwear or swimwear.
In some cases, abdominoplasty may be combined with other body surgeries, such as breast procedures or body contouring surgery, when it is part of an overall reshaping strategy.
Recovery
Recovery after abdominoplasty
Recovery depends on the extent of the surgery and the individual characteristics of the patient.
As a guideline:
- Duration of surgery: approx. 1.5 to 2.5 hours
- Discharge from hospital: usually the following day
- Return to work: about one week in non-physical activities
- Use of compression garment: approximately 5-6 weeks
- Full recovery: 4 to 6 weeks
During the first few days it is normal to notice abdominal tightness or swelling. Medical follow-up and compliance with the postoperative recommendations are essential for an adequate recovery.
Abdominoplasty:
Frequently Asked Questions
What problems can a tummy tuck correct besides excess skin?
In addition to removing excess skin, abdominoplasty can repair the separation of the abdominal muscles (diastasis), improve the firmness of the abdominal wall and redefine the contours of the abdomen.
Where is the abdominoplasty scar?
The scar is usually located on the lower abdomen, at the suprapubic level. It is designed so that it can be hidden under the underwear or swimming costume. Its length depends on the amount of skin that needs to be removed.
Can abdominoplasty be combined with liposuction?
Yes, in many cases it is combined with liposuction to improve the definition of the abdomen and flanks, achieving a more balanced body contour.
What is the actual recovery like after abdominoplasty?
During the first week it is common to experience swelling and a feeling of abdominal tension. Most patients are able to resume light daily activities within a few days, although strenuous physical activity is usually postponed for several weeks.
What if I plan to become pregnant or lose weight?
If pregnancy or significant weight loss is anticipated in the future, it may be advisable to postpone surgery. These changes may again modify the abdominal wall and affect the result obtained.
