Surgery to replace or remove breast prostheses
MADRID | ZURICH
The replacement of breast implants is an operation to replace previously placed breast prostheses with new ones or, in some cases, to remove them definitively. With the passage of time, changes may appear in the shape of the breast or in the tissues that make it advisable to consider a new intervention.
One of the most common causes is capsular contracture, also known as capsular fibrosis, a reaction of the body that can harden the tissue around the implant. This phenomenon can appear years after the initial surgery, especially in older implants.
In other situations, the reason for the change may be purely aesthetic. Some patients wish to change the size of the prostheses, improve the shape of the breast or adapt it to the natural changes that occur over time, such as loss of skin elasticity or changes in weight.
Implant exchange surgery makes it possible to update the prostheses for more modern models, correct alterations in the shape of the breast or improve the proportion of the breast, always seeking a natural and balanced result.

When breast implants may need to be replaced
Breast implant replacement may be considered for various medical or aesthetic reasons. In some cases, the procedure is recommended when the following conditions arise implant-related disorders, In other cases, it is the patient's wish to change the size or shape of the breast. Among the most frequent situations are:
- Capsular contracture or hardening of the tissue around the implant
- Rupture or damage to the breast implant
- Changes in breast shape over time
- Desire to modify the size or profile of the prostheses
- Displacement or malposition of the implant
The indication for the procedure depends on factors such as the type of previous implant, the condition of the breast tissue and the patient's expectations.
Surgical techniques
How breast implant exchange is performed
During implant exchange surgery, the existing prosthesis is removed and replaced with a new implant. In many cases, the procedure can be performed using the same scar from the previous surgery, avoiding new visible incisions. Depending on the situation, the procedure may include:
- Removal of the previous implant
- Release or treatment of the fibrous capsule
- Placement of a new breast implant
- Adjustment of the pocket where the prosthesis is housed
In some cases, implant exchange can be combined with mastopexy. (breast lift) to improve the position of the breast and optimise the aesthetic result.
What brands of implants are currently in use
The choice of implant depends on anatomical factors and patient preferences. Today there are high quality prostheses designed for safety, durability and a natural look. Among the most commonly used brands are:
- Motivation: Latest generation prostheses with a very natural feel and ergonomic designs. They have a wide variety of profiles and a very low rate of capsular contracture.
- B-Lite: Extremely lightweight implants, up to 30 % lighter than other implants of the same size, reducing pressure on breast tissue.
- Nagor: Round or anatomical implants designed to maintain a proper balance between projection and base, offering natural and long-lasting results.
What are implants made of and what shapes are available on the market?
Breast implants can have different shapes, which influence the final result of the breast.
Round implants: They provide even volume between the upper and lower chest.
Anatomical implants: They mimic the natural shape of the breast, with more volume in the lower pole.
Ergonomic implants: They adapt their shape according to the position of the body, behaving similarly to natural breast tissue.
In addition to their shape, implants are also differentiated by their degree of projection or profile, which allows the final result to be adapted to the anatomy of each patient.
Alternatives
Options for patients who wish to remove prostheses
Some women prefer to remove breast implants permanently and keep a natural breast without prostheses. In these cases, implant removal can be combined with other techniques to improve the shape of the breast, such as:
- Mastopexy (breast lift), which allows repositioning of the breast
- Lipofilling or fat grafting, to add volume using the patient's own fat.
These techniques can help maintain a harmonious breast contour even after implant removal.
Breast implant exchange :
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should breast implants be changed?
Modern implants are designed to be durable and do not have a mandatory replacement date. However, in some cases, replacement over the years may be recommended if changes in breast shape or problems associated with the implant occur.
Is implant exchange more complex than breast augmentation?
It depends on the reason for the surgery and the condition of the tissues. In many cases, the procedure can be performed using the same scar from the previous surgery.
Is it possible to change the size of the implants?
Yes, many patients take advantage of implant exchange to increase or decrease the size of the prostheses and adapt the result to their current preferences.
Can implants be removed without inserting new ones?
Yes, in these cases an explantation can be performed, which is often combined with mastopexy or lipofilling to improve the shape of the breast.
When will the final results be seen?
The change in the volume and shape of the breast is noticeable from the first few weeks, although the final result is defined progressively as the swelling subsides.
