Otoplasty
Correction of protruding ears
MADRID | ZURICH
Due to alterations in the formation of the ear during the gestation period, as well as the development of fragile cartilage and hereditary factors, children and adults may have an undesirable atrial shape. Depending on your clinical picture, the otoplasty procedure solves, with or without surgery and definitively, disorders in their shape, size and location, as well as their harmony with the face as a whole.
This procedure can be performed as a single procedure or in combination with several other facial procedures. The ears are an important part of the facial image and their correction is effective, safe and increases self-esteem.

Types of otoplasty
What kind of otoplasty is ideal for each patient?
Sutures, dimensions and cartilage configuration are fundamental elements for this procedure and vary individually in each case. At PD Dr. Richard Fakin's clinics, we analyse these premises in depth and indicate which otoplasty technique, as well as its possible type of ear cartilage remodelling, is the most suitable.
In most cases it is a matter of normalising the distance between the head and the helix (outer edge of the ear), as well as reducing the size of the ear concha if it is too large. This allows the desired shape and position of the earlobe to be achieved, always with stable and proportional results.

Surgical Technique
How are otoplasty surgeries performed at PD Dr. Richard Fakin's clinics?
Ear correction is performed for patients aged 7 years and older. Local anaesthesia is usually used and, if the patient prefers, under sedation. In all cases an incision is made behind the ear and the pinna is reshaped to enhance the ear.
The scars are located in the auricular sulcus and are imperceptible. In cases of lobuloplasty or correction of the torn lobe, the excess skin is removed from the lobe and the minimal invisible scar is left.
Duration
How long do otoplasty results last and what are the alternatives?
The results of otoplasty are usually stable over the long term. Once the shape and position of the ear has been corrected, the cartilage maintains its new configuration, so the result is considered permanent.
In certain cases, minimally invasive techniques can also be used, such as the EarFold system, which consists of placing a small implant or clip that helps to recreate the natural fold of the ear cartilage. This device is inserted through a small incision of approximately 5 mm, making it possible to correct certain alterations in the shape of the ear.
The choice of procedure depends on the degree of malformation of the auricular cartilage and the patient's expectations.
