Bichat’s fat pads are small clusters of fat in the cheeks that do not serve any significant function. Through a minor surgical procedure called bichectomy, these fat pads can be removed to slim and refine the lower part of the face. This treatment, increasingly popular among both men and women, also enhances the cheekbones and is typically performed quickly under local anesthesia, with immediately noticeable results.
Surgical technique
The surgical technique involves making small incisions inside the mouth, ensuring that scars remain invisible. Through these incisions, between 5 and 9 grams of fat (commonly known as the “Bichat fat pads”) are extracted, and the incisions are then closed with minimal sutures. The entire procedure usually takes under an hour, and because it is minimally invasive, recovery time is relatively short.

Post-operative care
- Oral hygiene: After the procedure, it is recommended to maintain good oral hygiene with mouthwashes and rinses to reduce the risk of infection.
- Swelling and discomfort: Applying cold compresses to the cheeks helps minimize swelling more quickly. Generally, any discomfort is mild and can be managed with basic pain relievers if needed.
- Results and follow-up: Final results become more evident after a few weeks, once any residual swelling subsides. A follow-up appointment is advised to monitor healing and make any necessary minor adjustments.
This surgery can be combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as blepharoplasty, hyaluronic acid fillers, or a lip lift, in order to achieve a more harmonious and balanced outcome.
