Open or closed rhinoplasty: how do we decide on the technique?

The choice depends on your anatomy and goals. Open surgery allows maximum precision in the nasal tip; closed surgery avoids external scarring and may be sufficient for moderate corrections. We always define it after a personalised assessment and simulation.

Can we also improve breathing in the same surgery?

Yes, we often combine cosmetic rhinoplasty with septum correction (septoplasty) and/or nasal valve correction if necessary. In this way we take care of the respiratory function as well as the shape.

How is the recovery from rhinoplasty week by week?

Splinting is usually 5-7 days. Visible swelling goes down a lot in 2-3 weeks; the tip is defined within 3-6 months and the final result settles for up to 12 months. In our clinic we give you clear guidelines for home care, check-ups and close follow-up.

When do I resume sport and glasses after surgery?

Gentle activity after 3-4 weeks; impact sports and glasses (if back-supported) best after 6-8 weeks. We also recommend strict sun protection and avoiding bumps or pressure on the nose.

Types of rhinoplasty

What type of rhinoplasty is right for each patient?

The shape of the nose, the structure of the cartilage, the thickness of the skin and any existing functional issues are key factors in choosing the most appropriate rhinoplasty technique for each patient. We assess each case to determine whether an open or closed rhinoplasty is the most appropriate technique and whether it is necessary to correct functional structures such as the nasal septum or turbinates.

We also assess whether it will be necessary to use a cartilage graft taken from the patient’s own body (autograft) or an allograft.

Surgical Technique

How is rhinoplasty surgery performed?

Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anaesthesia, supplemented with local anaesthetic to improve post-operative comfort and minimise swelling and bleeding.

The technique used will depend on the anatomical characteristics of each patient and the objectives of the procedure. Depending on the individual case, the procedure may be performed using either an open or closed rhinoplasty technique, allowing for the precise reshaping of the bone and cartilage structures of the nose, as well as the correction of functional abnormalities where necessary.

Following the procedure, a nasal splint is fitted to protect and stabilise the new structures. This splint is usually removed around 10 days after the operation.
