With the passage of time, after significant weight loss or simply due to the natural evolution of the skin, the thighs may lose firmness and sag, especially on the inner side and, in some cases, also on the outer side of the legs. When there is excess skin or marked sagging that does not improve with exercise or weight changes, a thigh lift may be an option to consider.

This surgery is aimed at improving the contour of the legs by removing excess skin and repositioning the tissues. The aim is not to artificially modify the anatomy, but to redefine the shape of the thigh in a proportionate way. In our clinics in Madrid and Zurich, each case is analysed individually to determine whether this surgery is the most suitable option and whether it is advisable to combine it with other techniques, such as liposuction.

Indications

What problems can a thigh lift correct?

The thigh lift is mainly indicated when there is significant flaccidity, excess skin or sagging on the inner or outer side of the legs. In these cases, the problem is not only the volume of the thigh, but also the loss of firmness of the tissues.

In selected patients, this intervention can help to:

  • reduce excess skin on the thighs
  • improving the firmness of the inner legs
  • redefine the contour between thigh, groin and knee
  • correcting sagging skin after significant weight loss

When there is localised fat accumulation, the procedure can be combined with liposuction to improve the overall body contouring result.

Patient profile

In which cases is thigh lift surgery recommended?

Not all thigh alterations require a thigh lift. This surgery is usually considered when there is a clear excess of skin or when the skin has lost its ability to retract after changes in weight or with the passage of time.

It is relatively common in patients who have undergone significant weight loss, for example after bariatric surgery, or in people who have sagging of the inner thigh despite maintaining a stable weight.

The indication depends on factors such as:

  • the quality of the skin
  • the distribution of fat tissue
  • the degree of flaccidity

For this reason, individual assessment is essential before any intervention is considered.

Thigh surgery techniques and scar placement

Planning is an essential part of the treatment. It is not only about increasing volume, but also about designing a balanced result adapted to each body.

During the consultation, aspects such as the following are assessed:

  • body proportions
  • natural shape of the buttocks
  • skin and subcutaneous tissue quality
  • availability of fat for lipotransfer
  • desired degree of projection
  • patient expectations

Based on this analysis, the most appropriate technique is defined to achieve a harmonious, natural result that is consistent with the anatomy of each person.

Safety and expectations of the procedure

As with any surgical procedure, a thigh lift requires a medical evaluation to assess health status, weight stability and factors that may influence healing.

Potential risks include:

  • healing problems
  • fluid accumulation (seroma)
  • temporary changes in sensitivity
  • asymmetries

For this reason, it is important to approach this surgery with realistic expectations and within an appropriate medical indication.

When surgery is well indicated, a thigh lift can improve the firmness and contour of the legs, especially in patients with excess skin following weight loss or changes in skin elasticity.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is not designed for weight loss or to reduce the overall volume of the legs. The thigh lift is mainly used to correct flaccidity and remove excess skin that appears on the inner or outer thigh. When there is localised fat in addition to excess skin, it can be combined with liposuction to improve the overall contour of the area.

Yes, the location of the scar depends on the degree of flaccidity and the technique used. In milder cases it may be concealed in the inguinal crease, whereas when the excess skin is greater, a vertical scar on the inner thigh may be necessary.

The change in the contour of the legs is usually noticeable from the first few weeks, although initially there may be swelling or a feeling of tightness in the tissues. The result is defined progressively as the swelling decreases and the scars evolve.

It depends mainly on the degree of sagging skin and excess tissue on the inner or outer thigh. A thigh lift is usually considered for patients who have excess skin after significant weight loss or when the skin has lost elasticity over time.

Yes, in some cases, a facelift can be combined with liposuction to improve body contouring and achieve a more complete reshaping of the legs.
